My Neighborhood

Thought I might give some of you out there a better idea of what my life is like here. These are just a few places I picked out around the school where I often find myself.

This is a picture of the entrance into the main building. It is rather large, and a bite outdated, but there is a certain sense of history here that I can appreciate. The main building of the university is filled with dorm rooms, class rooms and small stores, where you can buy everything from textbooks to household supplies.

This is just a picture of MGU in the snow. I kind of like it. Hope you do too.

This is the office of the Russian department, where I go to figure out my class schedule and stop for tea on the way home from Ashan, the biggest grocery store in the area.

Here's the building where I study. I wouldn't really call it modern, but it has a certain charm that I have grown to appreciate. I study on the 5th floor. The bottom 4 floors make up a sort of medical clinic, which is convenient... I guess.

The university here is named after Mikhail Lomonosov (Моско́вский госуда́рственный университе́т и́мени М.В.Ломоно́сова or Moskóvskiy gosudárstvennyy universitét ímeni M. V. Lomonósova if there are any of you who don't know the Cyrillic alphabet). According to people I have spoken to (and verified by Wikipedia), Lomonosov was a sort of renaissance man in Russia. He made important contributions to the world in astronomy, geology, and language. Unfortunately (as Russians so often lament about their great academics), most of his contributions are largely unknown to the rest of the world. This is a picture of a statue of Lomonosov that I pass on my way to the Metro station.

And here's a picture of the aforementioned Metro station, appropriately named "Universitet". I have relocated from the grey line to the red line, which is much cooler!

And finally.... a picture of Kapitoli, my local shopping center. It features a grocery store (my beloved Ashan!), a movie theater, a food court, several clothing stores, an electronics store, and some restaurants I visit from time to time.
