Russian Figure Skater Evgeni Pluschenko
"A Show of Champions and Friends"
This tour became very controversial after Pluschenko pulled out of the Olympics at the last minute, too late to give the backup a chance to compete. After the other guy had already qualified for the Olympics at some skating competition (where Russia did very poorly, only earning one spot at the Games), he was pushed out after a special committee was convened and decided to have Pluschenko replace him. If Pluschenko had pulled out of the Olympic event sooner, the backup still could have competed in his place. Evegeni's back hurt too much to skate in the Olympics, but it was not bad enough to cancel his show. People were outraged and accused Pluschenko of conniving to steal the other guy's spot in the Olympics to earn another medal in the team competition, knowing the whole time that he was going to pull out of the singles competition. (The whole thing was pretty similar to the Leno-O'Brien thing.) Pluschenko had to go on a media tour to say that, yes, he really did hurt his back. He brought out x-rays (which some specialists said were fake) and planned to have his back surgery broadcast live. I don't know if that actually happened – people kind of lost interest.
